February in the Adirondacks Means Skiing and Winter Fun

by Natalie Roth

Winter Sports and Activities are a Big Part of the Adirondack Living Experience

February in and around the Mohawk Valley means Winter Break, Presidents Day Weekend, and the best winter conditions we'll have all year. The Adirondacks are a winter paradise for snow and ice-centered activities. We're fortunate to have so much to do during the winter months. In fact, for many people, it's the best time of year to be a resident of the area.

Skiing and Snowboarding is in Full Swing in February

McCauley Mountain

McCauley Mountain, with an altitude of 2200 feet, is an excellent place for snow production. With 21 ski trails and five lifts, it offers great skiing conditions when weather permits. Located in the Town of Webb in the Hamlet of Old Forge, it serves as a gateway for various winter activities, including skiing at McCauley Mountain. Usually, the ski season begins early in December, and by February, the base is deep, and the snow is fresh. McCauley hosts its Winter Carnival in February to celebrate the peak of the season. They have cross-country skiing trails for Nordic enthusiasts and trails for snowshoeing. For more information about snow conditions and events, visit their website: McCauley Mountain.

Snow Ridge Ski Resort

Snow Ridge Ski Resort, located at the Tug Hill Plateau, is a family-owned ski resort with a loyal following. Despite a devastating tornado in 2023, the whole community worked together to restore it. With five lifts and a good mix of runs suitable for the entire family, they offer adult race leagues on Friday nights throughout February. Snow Ridge has two terrain parks, one for beginners and another for advanced skiers and snowboarders. For more details, visit: Snow Ridge Ski Resort.

Woods Valley

Woods Valley, situated in Westernville, NY, just west of Remsen and north of Rome, NY, at the Northwest end of Delta Reservoir, offers four lifts depending on snow conditions, tubing opportunities, and four terrain parks for various skill levels. The lodge at the center of the park makes taking a break from skiing especially appealing. As February approaches, there's something for the whole family at Woods Valley. Learn more at: Woods Valley.

Cross Country Trails and Nordic Skiing

The Black River Environmental Improvements Association (BREIA) offers cross-country skiing and snowshoe trails in the Tug Hill Plateau region of Central New York near Boonville. With over 50 kilometers of trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, BREIA provides five main trails available for public use. If you need skis or snowshoes, inquire about the sharing program or rent equipment from the Boonville Search and Rescue team for a $5 donation. Learn more at: BREIA.
